By 1973 billy barr was the only permanent resident of Gothic. A year into his stay in Gothic, barr started to document the weather, mainly as a way to pass the time. For more than 40 winters, he has kept meticulous notes on the behavior of the snow in the area. Twice a day, barr collects information on snowfalls, temperatures, and the animals which come in and out of his area of the Rockies.
Fabrice Wittner is an artist with a cause. Well known for his interest in raising awareness and prevention for climate change, the French artist and photographer found a way to bring together two of his passions: art and activism. Through a combination of environmentally friendly leatherette stencils atop low-pollution prints, Wittner turns breathtaking photos of the Northern Lights into an homage on Inuit iconography.
On the eastern coast of China, a once-bustling fishing village blends seamlessly into the hillside, reclaimed by the ivy and moss of the lush, green landscape. The village, located on Shengshan Island, is part of the Shengsi Islands, a smattering of over 400 islands just south of the mouth of the Yangtze River.
For thousands of years, Yuncheng Salt Lake has served as an important source of salt for residents all over China. Located in the Shanxi Province in Northern China, the lake, nicknamed “China’s Dead Sea,” has been the focus of numerous wars, territorial disputes, and religious traditions for over 4,000 years. Ancient people even worshipped “salt gods” in nearby temples to pay homage to the lake.
When most people think of “luxury,” the ice caps of the Arctic do not immediately come to mind. Luxury Action is changing that – one heated igloo at a time. For one month each year, they set up ten heated glass huts, with floor-to-ceiling views of the North Pole’s starry skies.
Just inside the leafy cover of the De Schorre Park forest, seven friendly giants stand constant guard, greeting visitors and keeping watch over the lush, green landscape. These enormous figures range from 23 to 59 feet long, but what makes them truly unique is that they are crafted entirely from discarded, recycled wood.
Hawaiian artist Sean Yoro, professionally known as HULA, is widely appreciated for his unique murals painted near or in large bodies of water. His love of nature and surfing has inspired him to create haunting artworks that speak of various environmental concerns, depicting figures that emerge from the water and blend with the surrounding environment.
While some people would turn away from abandoned or decaying buildings, contemporary French photographer Romain Veillon is drawn towards them. A childhood interest in exploring his grandmother’s abandoned truck factory turned into a desire to capture the unique beauty these locations hold. A longtime photographer, he eventually combined both interests.
Social impact artist Benjamin Von Wong is back with another immersive art experience aimed at raising awareness about the harm of plastic pollution. After his #Strawpocalypse installation in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Von Wong turned his attention to Singapore where he built #Plastikophobia, along with fellow artist Joshua Goh and social media strategist Laura François.
“It’s just one straw, said 8 billion people.” This line is what inspired Canadian photographer and artist Benjamin Von Wong to create his latest socially conscious art installation “The Parting of the Plastic Sea.” The stunning art piece is currently on display at the atrium of the Estella Place retail mall in District 2 of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, until March 24, 2019.
