This August, a different kind of celestial event will grace Colorado’s skies. High above Breckenridge, a constellation born of light, wind, and vision will rise, drift, and shimmer in mid-air—silent, weightless, and alive.

From August 15–17, 2025, the U.S. premiere of SPARK—a luminous spectacle by Dutch Studio Roosegaarde—will unfold as part of the 10th Breckenridge International Festival of Arts (BIFA). Caught on the breeze, thousands of biodegradable lights will flicker like fireflies, offering a quiet, mesmerizing alternative to fireworks.

Conceived by artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde, SPARK is a living light sculpture and a tribute to sustainable celebration. Already shown in over ten countries, the installation invites viewers into a shared moment of awe: thousands of glowing particles rising up to 160 feet, drifting, dancing, and dissolving into the night. Here, the wind leads the choreography—and each onlooker becomes part of the dream.

More than a spectacle, SPARK is a statement. In an era when fireworks spark concern over pollution, wildfires, and distress to people and animals, Roosegaarde offers a gentler vision—one that glows, not explodes. “The installation itself will be breathtaking,” said Tamara Nuzzaci, President and CEO of Breck Create, “and its ideology aligns with the sustainability goals and values of Breckenridge.”

The installation also shines as a beacon for Breckenridge’s pursuit of International DarkSky Community status—one of just 56 worldwide—highlighting the town’s pledge to protect the natural night. Viewing spots will be scattered across downtown, turning the entire town into an open-air gallery under the stars.

SPARK is just one luminous note in the ten-day symphony of BIFA 2025, unfolding August 15–24. From forest trails and riverside yoga to circus, sculpture, and stories rooted in identity, the festival transforms Breckenridge into a living canvas—where art and nature meet in quiet conversation.
