So why do we say that Le Grotte della Civita is more than just a hotel?

First and foremost, Le Grotte della Civita embraces and preserves Italy’s cultural heritage, starting with the charming, artisanal touches that catch your eye immediately.

Rather than simply offering a comfortable bed and good food, Le Grotte della Civita provides a slice of history, giving guests a rich, immersive experience in suites carved from ancient cave dwellings.

Handcrafted furnishings, exposed stone walls, and vaulted ceilings combine with minimal, essential modern comforts to create a pleasing and poignant contrast that enhances your stay.

Le Grotte della Civita’s location is equally remarkable: the historic Apennine village of Matera in southern Italy, renowned worldwide for its Sassi quarters.

The earliest inhabitants of this unique hamlet date back to the Bronze and Stone Ages. During the Middle Ages, Sassi evolved into a monastic community and eventually became a bustling farming center.

Le Grotte della Civita is located in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, overlooking the spectacular rock-hewn churches of Murgia Park.

Renovated to retain their original features, all 18 rooms—some over 160m²—and the ancient church known as “Cripta della Civita” offer guests a blend of spaciousness and timeless beauty.

Nothing embodies Sextantio’s mission of sustainable tourism more than Le Grotte della Civita, a hotel that leaves no stone—or cave—unturned in preserving Italy’s cultural soul.
