What Is the Story Behind the Forget-Me-Not Flower?
The legend of the Forget-Me-Not takes place in Germany, during the time of knights and ladies. One day, as a lady and her beloved knight wandered along the banks of the Danube River, they were captivated by the sight of pretty blue flowers.
These delicate blooms had been loosened by the river’s current, threatening to carry them downstream. Desiring to rescue them, the knight leaped into the water. Despite his efforts, the strong current began to carry him away. Before being swept away, he managed to toss the flowers onto the riverbank, calling out, “vergiss mein nicht,” German for “forget me not.”
A similar legend suggests that the knight didn’t deliberately jump into the water. Instead, the weight of his armor caused him to topple into the river while he bent down to pick the flowers for his lady. As the current swept him away, he called out “forget me not.”
Today, people select Forget-Me-Nots for gardens and bouquets not only for their beauty but also for what they symbolize: an enduring love that transcends even the strongest river current.
