Til Kolare’s music isn’t just sound; it’s an immersive journey into the depths of human emotion. Each melody paints a vivid scene, each narrative is a tapestry woven with threads of longing, anticipation, and exhilaration. In this exclusive interview, Kolare invites us into the creative heart of “Main Theme,” the cornerstone of his captivating new album, “Filmmusik II.” Forget the typical music interview – this is a deep dive into the mind of a visionary artist, where every note becomes a brushstroke on the canvas of imagination. Are you ready to be swept away by the music?
Could you please walk us through the genesis of the “Main Theme”? How did its inspiration weave into the overarching narrative and thematic essence of “Filmmusik II”?
My creative fire has long been fueled by the dream of composing a film score. That’s the driving force behind my new album, “Filmmusik II” (German for “soundtrack”), which follows the spirit of my 2021 release “Filmmusik.” And like any captivating soundtrack, it needed a powerful “Main Theme” to anchor it. This composition became the very foundation of the entire album.
The “Main Theme” isn’t just about setting the mood; it embodies the album’s soul, its sonic identity. It’s the emotional core, the centerpiece around which the musical narratives unfold, taking the listener on a unique journey.
“Main Theme” uses distinct movements, imagery, and music to express themes of liberation and self-discovery. Could you expand on how these creative decisions reflect specific societal or cultural influences that have personally resonated with you?
Film scores have the power to transport listeners and viewers into different worlds, and for me, they represent an artistic escape from the limitations and exclusions of reality. More than just depicting an emotional journey, the music in “Main Theme” strives to build a bridge between people. I believe music has the unique ability to transcend language and cultural barriers, creating a shared emotional landscape where everyone can connect.
How does music and dance, compared to other art forms, allow for a visceral and personal representation of liberation and self-discovery?
Music and dance have a unique ability to tap into the depths of our emotions, generating feelings that words often struggle to capture. This is especially true when it comes to themes of liberation and self-discovery. The physicality of dance brings these themes to life in a tangible way. Movements can symbolize breaking free from limitations, while choreography can visually represent the journey of self-discovery.
What truly captivates me is the synergy between music and dance. Each art form is powerful on its own, but when combined, they create an even more immersive and impactful experience. This synergy allows for a deeply personal connection between the artist and the audience.
While “Main Theme” delves into themes of liberation and self-discovery, its captivating essence extends beyond these specific motifs. Which universal human experiences or emotions were you aiming to evoke, and how did you cultivate this profound emotional resonance with the audience?
In my music, I prioritize the crafting of sonic elements and emotional atmospheres. This often imbues the listener with a sense of melancholy. However, when juxtaposed with dance, the melancholic music assumes a versatility that enables viewers to project their own emotions onto the music, fostering individual identification.
In “Main Theme,” the dancer’s journey unfolds against the backdrop of an enchanted staircase and mystical building. How does this setting influence the female dancer’s emotions or decisions within the video?Does she approach it with fear, excitement, or another emotion?
The choice of the staircase is rooted in the intention to highlight the emotional depth of the dancer and enrich the narrative dimension of the piece. The environment serves as a metaphorical framework that mirrors the inner journey of the dancer, portrayed by Paulina Brunner, and contextualizes her emotions visually.
The staircase could be interpreted as a symbol representing the challenges and peaks of life. The dancer’s interaction with this environment reflects a wide range of emotions. The specific unfolding of events in the scene is left open, inviting the viewer to engage their imagination.
Could you share a moment during filming that felt particularly meaningful or impactful for you or the team, perhaps one that also presented a challenge but ultimately led to a valuable breakthrough or shift in perspective?
What made this project unique was the fact that our team came together for the first time in this constellation at the beginning of the shoot. Prior to that, I had discussed the project with all involved and outlined my ideas in broad strokes. Projects of this nature, with numerous unknowns, always raise questions about whether the concept can be realized with limited resources.
The truth is, such projects hold a special fascination, especially when various creative minds converge. In this creative melting pot, unforeseen elements often emerge, injecting the project with a significant boost of passion, enthusiasm, and enjoyment – three crucial factors in realizing such endeavors. At this juncture, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my team, who threw themselves into this project with unwavering dedication!
Working with different creative forces such as the choreographer and dancer requires collaboration and negotiation. How did you manage to balance your vision with theirs while ensuring that your unique artistic voice shines through in “Main Theme”?
Primarily, this involved fostering mutual respect, openness, and trust in the dancer’s instincts and talent. Paulina choreographed her dance herself, and I witnessed the choreography for the first time on the day of the shoot (and was immediately thrilled). It was crucial to use my vision as a starting point while also allowing space for Paulina’s individual expressions.
As someone who wears multiple creative hats – composer, sound producer, digital artist, and foley artist – how do you navigate between these roles, and do you find that each informs the other in your creative process?

I really enjoy wearing hats, and I have quite a large collection of them. When it comes to creative hats, they don’t differ much from each other for me. In all of these expressions, emotion and aesthetics take center stage in the creative process. The versatility of these roles allows me to approach a project from various perspectives, which often leads to new insights.
The connection between these “hats” is particularly evident in my role as a Foley Artist: I delve into the details to create acoustic textures and sounds that enhance the emotional depth of both the visual and auditory elements.
Looking ahead, what can fans expect from you in terms of future projects or endeavors, and are there any themes or concepts you’re particularly excited to explore in your upcoming work?
I hold hope that the Spotify algorithm may introduce one of my tracks to a director’s feed again. It happened once before, and while the final film wasn’t exactly what I envisioned, it only fueled my passion for creating film scores even more. In the meantime, I’m constantly composing new music and exploring exciting sounds.
