With thousands of Airbnb spots available across all five New York City boroughs, visitors to the Big Apple may be overwhelmed by their choices for a short-term vacation rental. Should they follow the typical tourist trail and stay in Times Square? Maybe not. Should they try to find a unique apartment in the coolest part of town? Yes, of course.
For one of the best Airbnb places in New York, visitors should book a stay at “The Funky Loft” in Bushwick, one of the hippest neighborhoods in Brooklyn. “The Funky Loft” was named “The Coolest Airbnb in Brooklyn” by Time Out Magazine in 2017 and has been used for photo and video shoots by brands like Vogue, J Brand, and Grey Goose.
The host, Marcella Lentz-Pope, is an actor who first hosted visitors in her home in Los Angeles before moving to New York, and she has carefully selected and designed every room in the apartment. She lives in the balcony room along with her boyfriend, so someone is usually around to greet guests and answer questions.
There are three bedrooms with different themes (The Tropical Getaway, A Room With a View and The Backpackers Dream), an airy living room with open beams and 16-foot ceilings, a beautiful kitchen, and a 1970s-themed bathroom. The building was originally built in the 1920s, and some of the original brick walls remain despite extensive renovations.
Some of the most memorable features of the loft include a swing in the middle of the living room, jungle-themed wallpaper in the bathroom, a 1950’s Coca Cola refrigerator, sliding wood barn doors, two skylights and many retro decorations and plants. Marcella also curates the background music for her visitors.
Bushwick is known for being artsy, and “The Funky Loft” certainly upholds this reputation. Its location is a perfect base for enjoying both the energy of Manhattan – just a 30-minute subway ride away – and the peace and quirkiness of Brooklyn.
