The world of haute couture is known for being otherworldly, fantastical and sublimely artistic. Few designers understand this better than Thierry Mugler.
Mugler, who was born in Strasbourg, France, and studied dance before turning to design, is known for more than just his hyper-feminized fashion and perfume creations. A talented photographer and filmmaker, he has worked with the likes of singer George Michael and actress Juliette Binoche. He has also created costumes for the Festival d’Avignon and Beyoncé’s tours and music videos.
As Canada’s NUVO Magazine states, “[Mugler’s] couture collections were symbolic symphonies of the exotic and erotic, (hyper)futuristic and (hyper)feminine, science fiction, and sublime – a story of silhouettes, told through impossibly cinched waists, avant-garde styling, and unconventional materials.”
The “Thierry Mugler: Couturissime” exhibition, running from March 2, 2019, to September 8, 2019, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) in Canada will showcase more than 140 of the designer’s fashions, accessories and stage costumes. In addition to a wide collection of his haute couture and ready-to-wear creations, the exhibit will share never before seen videos and sketches. Visitors will be treated to the beautiful photographs of contemporary photographers Avedon, Bourdin, Newton, and others as well. All the artwork will be displayed in carefully designed galleries to give visitors the impression of stepping inside the magical world of Thierry Mugler.
The exhibition has been curated by Thierry-Maxime Loriot, under the direction of Nathalie Bondil. The exhibition is presented by the MMFA in collaboration with the Groupe Clarins and the Maison Mugler.
