Burano is a colorful little island near Torcello in the northern Venetian Lagoon, 7 miles from Venice in Italy, Europe. Tourists can visit Burano, the hometown of great Italian artists like sculptor Remigio Barbaro, musician Pino Donaggio, and composer Baldassare Galuppican, by joining a 45-minute waterbus ride from Venice.

The island is widely known for its picturesque narrow streets, adorned with multicolored flowers balconies and brightly painted homes reflected into the green waters of the channels. Stories among its people narrate that local fishermen decided to paint their houses in vivid colors to be able to see them through the fog when fishing far away.

Strolling along Piazza Galuppi, you can watch local women creating intricate lace artworks inside their shops. You can also explore many souvenir stores selling Venetian masks and Murano glass objects, as well as restaurants serving typical Venetian lagoon sea-food.

Burano is known for its fish dishes, the most famous of which is the “risotto de gò.” There are also many pastry stores in the area to enjoy a delicious ice cream or the typical Burano round cookies “Bussolà” and “Esse.”

We recommend visiting La Casa di Bepi Suà, the façade of which was decorated with geometric patterns in the 1960s by cinema operator Giuseppe Toselli, known as Bepi Suà, and the house of sculptor Remigio Barbaro.

Some of Burano’s main attractions are the Church of St. Martin with the leaning tower behind it, hosting a wonderful painting created by Italian artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, the Oratorio di Santa Barbara, the Museo del Merletto (Lace Museum), and the Town Hall.
